Eyelash Extensions | My Experience

For someone who has super short and straight lashes, I’ve always pondered the thought of getting eyelash extensions. So when I came across an amazing deal on Groupon, I decided to take the plunge and try it out. In this post, I’ll be sharing my entire experience and discussing the pro’s and con’s of getting them.

The Cost

I paid £19 for natural mink individual lashes from the DVA Beautique at Westfield London. They usually charge £55, whilst other salons can charge up to £100 for a full set. So this was an absolute bargin - I also had a 15% off promo code which definitely sealed the deal for me.

Application

After filling in a brief health questionnaire, the lash technician sat me down, cleaned my eye area and soon began. She dipped each lash in permanent glue and attached it on top of my natural lashes. After a while, my eyes actually started watering up because of the glue. I was a little concerned but apparently this is very common. She handed me a little squeeze air pump which relieved the slight stinging. She didn’t place a lash guard on, which I thought was pretty unusual. The lashes actually started to tangle up and the glue got everywhere. Anyway after about thirty minutes, the treatment was complete. She cleaned up all the excess glue in and around my eyes and sent me on my way.

Results & Aftercare

At first, it took me a while to warm up to my new look. I found that the lashes were a little too long and weighed my eyes down. Despite this, I thought the lash technician did a great job. The lashes were evenly distributed and applied very well - besides the length, you couldn’t tell that I had extensions because they were stuck very close to the root and my real lashes were pretty much undetectable.

Washing my face was pretty hard because you can’t be rubbing your eyes or getting any product on them (for the first 48 hours anyway). I also have hooded eyes so the lashes in the inner corners often felt like they were rubbing against my lids. Thankfully, those inner lashes were the first ones for fall out. After that, my eyes soon felt more comfortable and I started getting used to having them on. I wanted them to stay on for as long as possible so I decided to not wear any eye make up whilst I had them on.

Removal

I had the odd lash or two fall out during the first week, but during the second and third week, you could tell the glue was loosening up. I was able to detach chunks of lashes from my eye - but I found that the more lashes that fell out, the more natural my lashes looked - I loved it.  Eventually I decided to finally get them removed at the same salon. It cost me £10 for the lash removal. They cleaned my eye area, used a special remover and wiped off the lash extensions. Sadly, this left my real lashes in a terrible state - they were half the size they were before I had lash extensions! To be honest, I was relieved that they were off - I could finally rub my eyes and not worry about lashes hanging off my eye.

Advantages

  • Convenient - No need for mascara or liner
  • Looks far more natural than wearing strip false lashes

Disadvantages

  • Difficult to remove makeup
  • Can’t rub eyes
  • Can damage your real lashes
  • Can be very expensive in the long run

I am on the fence on the about lash extensions - I loved how I could get ready in five minutes but the after care and maintenance requires quite a bit of effort. I would get them again maybe for a special occasion but I would never consider having them on for longer than one cycle.
